Microsoft trademarked “i’m”?

Written by Patrick Hall, August 6th, 2008

Microsoft apparently has trademarked the word “i’m“.

Looks like a good cause and all (fundraising for charity), but surely the trademark wasn’t necessary (why can’t they just do what they’re doing without trying to trademark that word?)

And if there has ever been a trademark that’s unenforceable, this has got to be it.

I think the idea is they are trying to trademark “i’m” with a lower case “i” — if they were trying to trademark “I’m” it would be different.

It is the mark/logo/symbol, shape or recognisable pattern that is being protected, not the word.

Ah, that makes sense. Though one couldn’t tell from the small print at the in the email I received from the National MS Society, which simply says “i’m is a trademark of Microsoft Corp.”

That is fair. I will let one off the hook. >;-)
